Our work includes the support of many educational, social, and religious events. We sponsor and organize receptions and/or breakfasts for celebrations such as First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Graduation. We sponsor and coordinate children's holiday parties, field day and skating parties. We honor our teachers with appreciation luncheons, monthly treats and wish list funding.

PTO works to further the development of the computer program, the school library, the Art Smart Program, and the special areas (MAPS). We bring in visiting artists, musicians, outside speakers and presentations for the students. We award four $750 scholarships to 8th grade students attending Catholic High Schools.

Your PTO dues are included in your registration fees, but to be the most effective PTO possible, we need your time and talent too. Please join us in 2008-2009. We invite you to be involved. Come to our meetings and join a committee. The rewards are grand!

ST. JOSEPH HANDBOOK &
                  CODE OF CONDUCT

St. Joseph Catholic School admits students of any race, color and national or
ethnic origin and gender. Preference in admissions is given to members of St.
Joseph Parish and members of the Catholic faith.

I. SCHOOL COMMUNICATION

While the St. Joseph administration, faculty and staff always attempts to foresee
and avoid difficulties, we realize that problems and misunderstandings occur.
Open honest communication among parents, teachers and administration will
solve nearly all problems.

If a problem arises at school, we ask that you do the following.

·   If the problem involves a classroom teacher, please call or e-mail the
    teacher at school or arrange for a conference by contacting the teacher
    at school. If, after speaking with the teacher, the problem is not
    resolved, contact the school administration.

·   For problems not directly involving a classroom teacher, please directly contact
    the administration through the school office. There is no substitute for
    communication. Often rumor and misinformation can be avoided by open
    discussion.

·   Avoiding hearsay and misinformation that results from gossip or speculation can
     often prevent problems.

II. RELIGIOUS FORMATION AND STUDENT MASSES

Religious instruction is part of every day at St. Joseph. This instruction may be in the form of liturgy of the Mass, prayer services or classroom instruction. Students have the opportunity for daily prayer. Reconciliation services and special prayer services are held throughout the year. Commitment to service for others is also a priority in the students' faith development. Religious instruction follows the outcomes of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas.

All school Masses and prayer services are planned once a month for special occasions/First Fridays. See the calendar for dates. Parents are invited to all

III. ACADEMICS AND CURRICULUM

The curriculum follows the requirements of the State of Kansas and the outcomes of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Textbook adoptions are based on recommendations by the Archdiocesan Educational Department, the principal and school personnel.

Shawnee Mission Services

A representative from the Shawnee Mission School District meets with the Achievement Center Director once a month to discuss special needs of individual St. Joseph students. This SMSD representative acts as a consultant to our school.

Achievement Center

The purpose of the Achievement Center (located on the second floor rooms 201 and 203) is to serve students with special needs. Placement in the Achievement Center may be determined by a student's performance on standardized test, local measures and/or classroom achievement. Placement may be short term or long term. The Achievement Center offers the following services:

·     individualized instruction for students with special needs.
 ·    small group instruction for students who need support and
         reinforcement in any subject, especially reading and math.
·     diagnostic testing.
·     computer programs for enrichment or remediation.

The Achievement Center is available to all students at St. Joseph School. Students have the opportunity to use the Achievement Center to take tests, have tests read to them, make up class work after an illness or for any other needs that arise.

Gifted Education

Enhanced Learning Services for students is provided by St. Joseph School and the Shawnee Mission School District. Students are screened by their standardized test scores and teacher recommendation for the St. Joseph program. Students who qualify are offered the opportunity to pursue an area of interest through independent study under the supervision of a mentor teacher at school. St. Joseph students are screened for the Shawnee Mission program through the process required by the state of Kansas. Students who qualify through this process are served through the Shawnee Mission School District, if desired.

The Iowa Test of Basic Skills is given each year in grades 3 through 8. The Cognitive Abilities Test is given in grades 3, 5, and 7. Both tests are administered in the fall. The results of the tests provide objective information about the child's growth in the fundamental skills of vocabulary, reading, the mechanics of writing, methods of study, and mathematics. This information is an aid used by the teacher to assess a child's strengths and weaknesses in his or her educational development. ITBS results are shared at Parent Teacher Conference Days if available. Results are mailed if not received by conference time.

Kansas State Assessments are also given in grades 3-8 at St. Joseph according to state guidelines.                                                                                                  .

Homework

The purpose of homework assignments is to compliment and reinforce the material that is presented during the class period. Homework helps the student develop the ability to work independently and to develop a sense of responsibility. Homework may be reading, studying or written assignments. Since each homework assignment has an educational objective, it is important that assignments be satisfactorily completed by the student on time. Assignments that are missed due to absence may be turned in for credit if made up within three days. The parent and/or student should contact the teacher in the event of an extended absence.

Grading Scale

Students may be graded on written work, classroom participation and subject tests. The following grade scale is used at St. Joseph School:

top

                                                                                                                           9
                  A                94% - 100%
                  B                87% - 93%
                  C                75% - 86%
                  D                68% - 74%
                  F                 67% below

Failure in a given subject is determined by an average of both semester grades that is 67% or below.

Cheating

Cheating is a dishonest act that has impact on a student's formation and academic progress. Cheating is copying someone else's work, turning in work as your own that someone else has done or allowing, in any way, another student to use your work. It includes "cutting and pasting," plagiarism, dishonesty in testing situations or any other intellectual dishonesty. Students should avoid any cheating situation or even the appearance of cheating. A grade of zero is the consequence for cheating. In middle school, students will also receive a Parent Communication notice and they will not be eligible for honor roll the remainder of that school year after the second cheating incident. Eighth grade students who are involved in repeated cheating incidents will not be considered for a speaking part in the graduation ceremony.

Honor Roll 6th, 7th and 8th Grade

St. Joseph School recognizes honor and academic excellence by middle school students through the "Excellence in Education Award" and the "Principal's Honor Roll" award.

The criteria to be awarded the "Excellence in Education Award" consists of the following:

         ·     An overall grade point average of 95% and higher, with no grade in any
               subject below 87%.
         ·     Any student receiving three Parent Communication slips in the quarter will
               not be eligible that quarter.
         ·     After the second incident of cheating a student will not be eligible for
                honors the remainder of that school year.

The criteria to be awarded the "Principal's Honor Roll" consists of the following:
         ·     An overall grade point average of 90%-94%, with no grade in any
                subject below 87%.

     ·     Any student receiving three Parent Communication Reports in the quarter
           will not be eligible that quarter.
     ·     After the second incident of cheating a student will not be eligible for honors
           the remainder of that school year.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Conferences are formally scheduled twice a year. See the calendar for dates and times. However, if at any time you feel a need for additional conferences, please feel free to call the teacher and make mutually convenient arrangements.

Graduation

All financial, academic and discipline obligations must be met for an 8th grade student to be eligible for graduation. The graduates of St. Joseph School are honored at an 8:15 A.M. all-school Mass planned by the 2nd grade and an evening graduation prayer service. Recipients of scholarships, academic and service awards are recognized at the morning Mass. Graduates are also the honored guests at a breakfast following the Mass. The graduates wear caps and gowns to both the Mass and the graduation ceremony. The honor of a part in the graduation ceremony is given to those students who have earned the highest grade point average for the first three quarters of the current school year. The Pastor and Administration confer the diplomas.

Retention

It is essential that a student master the basic skills of one grade level before he or she can be successful at the next level. If a child has not demonstrated competency in the skills that are a prerequisite for success at the next grade level, parents, staff and administration will meet to determine if retention is an option.

Summer School

In grades 6, 7 and 8 if a student fails a core subject for the year summer school will be required to make up the deficiency. Eighth graders who fail a core subject will not receive a diploma until they satisfactorily complete summer school. Failure is defined as an average of the two semester grades that is 67% or below. If a student has failed more subjects than can be made up in a summer program, the principal will contact the parents with a determination of the student's status.

IV. DISCIPLINE                                                                                             10

One of the most important lessons education should teach is discipline. While it does not appear as a subject, it underlies the whole educational structure. It is training that develops self-control, character, orderliness and efficiency. It is the key to good conduct and proper consideration for others. We believe that teachers and parents share the responsibility for the development of positive behavior in the spirit of Christian values. The best discipline is self-discipline. All students will assume personal responsibility for their behavior and actions, and accept the responsibility and consequences of any inappropriate behavior.

St. Joseph Catholic School is committed to providing a Catholic, faith-filled environment for all students, employees, volunteers and patrons in which Christ-like behaviors are ever present. This Catholic Environment will be free from harassment, intimidation or bullying. If any such behaviors do occur, all community members will be able to tell and know that the incident is unacceptable and will be dealt with effectively in a Christ-like way. For this goal to be obtained all students, faculty, staff and parents must accept responsibility for the atmosphere at St. Joseph.

The focus of the discipline system is to evaluate behavior and then work with the student to change the behavior so that it is appropriate and does not interfere with the teaching-learning environment. The goal is not to judge the student, but rather to help him/her develop appropriate behavior that fosters their development as individuals in God's kingdom. The attainment of this goal requires a cooperative effort among students, staff and parents.

The following inappropriate behaviors may be handled within the classroom according to consequences established by the classroom teacher and students in K-8. Offenses may result in the issuance of a Parent Communication Report (PCR) and/or detention for students in grades 4-8:

                      ·     Inappropriate language;
                      ·     Misuse of cafeteria food;
                      ·     Gum chewing;
                      ·     Being tardy for class (this includes all classes throughout the
                                 day);
                      ·     Note-writing;
                      ·     Not returning signed home/school communications;
                      ·     Noncompliance with the dress code;
                      ·     Snowball throwing or fighting;
                      ·     General misbehavior;

Parent Communication Reports (PCR) sent home, require a parent's signature and are to be returned the next day. Students serve detention time after school.

The consequences of a PCR for each quarter are:

    ·     First PCR - 1/2 hour detention;
    ·     Second PCR - 1 hour detention;
    ·     Third PCR - 1 hour detention and a conference with parents, teachers and an administrator to discuss appropriate further action. The student is not eligible for any Honor Roll that quarter.

For all students the following serious behaviors may result in removal from the classroom and possible suspension with loss of grade:

    ·     Fighting, giving the appearance of fighting or any purposeful action that may
          result in bodily harm to another person. (Fighting results in automatic
          suspension and probation in grades 6-8. Probation status requires that a
          student avoid serious discipline violations for the stated probation period. The
          likely result of violating probation is removal from school.);
    ·     Written or verbal derogatory remarks or other actions that may be intended to
           cause harm to a person's character or self-esteem;
    ·     Use of foul, obscene or offensive language;
    ·     Disrespect; · Defiance;
    ·     Repeated cheating - Refer to explanation on page 9.
    ·     Lying and/or deceit;
    ·     Stealing;
    ·     Computer hacking and/or inappropriate use of the computer;
    ·     Leaving the building without permission;
    ·     Vandalism and/or destruction of property.  Students are responsible for the
           care of their books, supplies, desks and school property in general. Students
           are expected to pay for damage to or loss of school property.

The following behaviors may result in immediate removal from the classroom and possible suspension with loss of grade or expulsion. Proper authorities will also be contacted, when appropriate, in cases of illegal actions and/or behaviors:
    ·     Use or possession of a weapon, explosive, or any item with potential for
           bodily harm. (Possession means on self or school property.);
    ·     Use or possession of a knife, including pocket knives;
    ·     Possession or use of any drugs and/or drug paraphernalia. (This includes
          alcohol, tobacco, matches, lighters, etc.);
    ·     Physical assault to any school staff, school representative or other student.
          (Shoving, hitting, pushing, spitting, etc.);
    ·     Acts of arson;

top

                                                                                                                         11
  ·     Acts of bullying or repeated, continuing harassment of another individual that
          would cause a reasonable person to feel terrorized, frightened, intimidated
          and /or threatened. This includes but is not limited to inappropriate touching,
          slurs, rumors, jokes, innuendo's, demeaning comments, drawing cartoons,
          pranks, gestures, physical attacks, threats or other written, oral or other
          physical actions.
     ·     Acts of retaliation in regards to bullying reports.
     ·     Making false bullying accusation.

Parents or students may notify the school of continued bullying behavior or serious threats to safety in person, by phone or email to teachers, staff and/or school administration.

The administration reserves the right to deal with any other serious behaviors. Parents are expected to address issues and be part of the solution to rectifying behavior that interferes with teaching and learning.

Student Procedures and Rules

When parents drop off students they are not allowed to leave the premises without permission. Any students arriving at school are expected to enter the building immediately. No student is allowed to leave the premises with another parent unless written or oral permission is given.

In an effort to encourage responsibility and help the office run more efficiently, students are not to call home except in cases of emergency. Issues such as forgotten items and social activities are not considered emergencies.

Electronic Devices

Students are not to bring cell phones, DVDs/CDs, DVD/CD players, iPods, electronic games, digital cameras or other valuables to school. These distract students from their primary task of learning.

Cell phone calls, texting and cell phone picture taking are an increasing problem at school. Cell phones found during the school day will be taken and held in the office until the end of the day. Parents will be notified of the policy violation. We thank you for your cooperation in dealing with this distraction to the learning environment.

Detention

Teachers have the authority to keep any student after school for any significant matter they deem important, whether it be disciplinary or academic. In cases of

transportation problems, the student will be afforded a day's notice in order to get his or her transportation arrangements made. However, the school reserves the right to ask a student to stay after school without 24 hours notice in cases where serious disciplinary action is necessary.

Truancy

Truancy is a serious offense in education. A truant student will be subject to serious disciplinary action as decided by the administration. There will be no opportunity to make up work when a class or day has been skipped

Chewing Gum, Eating Candy and Soft Drinks

Keeping our Education Center clean is very important in promoting a good learning atmosphere. Cleaning chewing gum, candy or soda stains off walls, floors, carpets, desks, etc. becomes a difficult task. For these reasons, students are not allowed to chew gum, eat candy or drink soft drinks at any time in school or on the premises. On special occasions treats may be served in the Commons. However, no soft drinks are allowed. Offenders will receive a detention for the infraction. Repeat offenders will be handled by the administration.

V. SCHOOL OFFICE AND PROCEDURES

The school office is the mainstay of an efficiently operated school. In order for us to serve you better, we offer the following information.

The school office is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM during the school year. The office is open from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during June and August and is closed during the month of July.

School Volunteers/Virtus Training

All parents wishing to volunteer and work directly with our school children must attend an initial Virtus training, complete paperwork for a background check and continue online updates. This includes, but is not restricted to parents wishing to serve as library volunteers, primary grade helpers and all field trip chaperones. You can register for the free training at www.Virtus.org . Please call the school office to receive the necessary paperwork after completing the class. We thank you for volunteering your time to serve our children. Contact the school office, if you have any questions.

Requests to have homework sent home should be made when reporting the

top

                                                                                                                       12
absence. It is not possible to collect homework at the end of the school day. Please check www.teacherweb.com for homework updates.

School Visitors
It is important for the safety of your child that we know who is in the Education Center. The building is locked during school hours. Visitors will need to ring the bell outside the main doors when they arrive to be let into the lobby. Anyone other than school personnel and students is asked to check in at the lobby desk first and

wear a visitor or volunteer sticker during their time in the building Visitors are welcome, however unplanned visits are a disruption to class. Please call and schedule an appointment with the teacher before or after school.

Classroom Parties/Events and Notices/Flyers

Any non-scheduled parties, classroom events, gift exchanges or money collections MUST be approved through the school office prior to planning. Notes, letters and flyers sent home with students MUST also be approved through the office. Please do not make copies until approval is given. Invitations to private parties or social events may not be distributed in school or on the school premises.

There are no exceptions to the above guidelines.

Calls to the Office

When calling to report an absence, doctor's appointment, etc. please call the school nurse (ext. 4526) before 9:00 AM. This extension can be reached 24 hours a day. When you are calling for information or anything else, please call after 9:30 AM, if possible, and talk to the school secretary (ext. 4500).

Inclement Weather

The decision to cancel school due to inclement weather is made by the Archdiocesan School Office and not on an individual school basis. Notifications of school closings are made available to all local news agencies. Parents/guardians should look or listen for "Johnson/Wyandotte County Catholic Schools" on local TV or radio stations. Also, if parents have signed up for weekly automatic email updates, a message about school closings will be sent to that email address as soon as possible. A recorded message will be left on the school's answering service as well.

Our school procedure is, that once school is in session for the day, the administration will not cancel classes or dismiss early because of weather.

Parents/guardians are welcome to make arrangements to pick up students early if they wish. We ask, however that these arrangements be made as early as possible so that students are picked up no later than 3:00 PM. Picking up later than this disrupts the normal dismissal at 3:15 PM.

Forgotten/Delivered Items

Any items brought to school for students (lunches, books, assignments, gym clothes, etc.) should be brought to the lobby desk. All items should be clearly marked with the student's name and homeroom. Interruptions to class are kept to a minimum, however students will be notified to come to the front desk to pick delivered items.

Any items delivered to school for a student such as flowers, cookie baskets and balloons etc. will not be delivered to the classroom. The student will be notified to pick up the item at the lobby desk after school.

Lost and Found

A box is located in the Commons for lost and found items. Items not claimed at the end of each semester will be given to the poor.

Birthday Book Club

The St. Joseph's Library Birthday Book Club is a program whereby a student may select a book to donate to the school library in honor of his or her birthday. Every student is invited to participate during their birthday month. Summer birthdays are honored in December, January, and February. With parental permission and $10.00, students may go to the library on the day of their birthday or half birthday. Volunteers are available to assist the student in selecting from a large variety of quality, new books. At that time, a bookplate is placed in the book with the student's name and birthday. The students will receive a memento of their donation as well.

VII. NURSE'S OFFICE AND HEALTH POLICIES

The school nurse, is available Monday through Friday 7:45 A.M. till 3:15 P.M. All calls concerning absences, tardies, appointments and homework should be directed to her at extension 4526. Voice mail will answer 24 hours a day. All calls to the school before 9:00 A.M. will be answered by the nurse. If you have other questions, please call the school secretary after 9:30 A.M.

Absences

When a child is absent from school we request that the parent call the school nurse before 9:00 AM to report the child's illness or family-related absence. Voice mail messages can be left 24 hours a day. As provided by Kansas' law, students who are absent for three consecutive days are required to provide a physician's written excuse for the absence.

If you would like to pick up your child's homework after 3 PM or have the homework sent home with a brother/sister or friend, it must be requested at the time the absence is reported. It is not possible to collect homework at the end of the school day. You may check daily assignments at www.teacherweb.com.. Students have three days to make up any missed assignment due to absences. Please contact the teacher in case of extended absences. The Nurse's voice mail is available any time day or night.

Absences and tardies are counted as follows:

Arrival 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM = Tardy
Arrival after 10:00 AM = 1/2 Day Absence

If gone from school over 2 hours for any reason = 1/2 Day Absence

Leaving for the day before 10:00 AM = 1 Day Absence Leaving for the day after 10:00 AM = 1/2 Day Absence

Attendance is important to ensure the most benefit from the St. Joseph academic program. Please keep this in mind when planning family trips and vacations. While opportunities arise that cannot be avoided, with careful planning and consideration most can. Every effort is made to support students when class is

top

                                                                                                                        14
missed, however it is not always possible for a teacher(s) to pull together work for extended periods of time.

Appointments

Regardless of the situation, no student is allowed to leave the school premises without written permission turned in and approved, or a parent/guardian phone call in advance. In case of emergencies, parents should contact the school office. A parent must sign out the student in the office before leaving and upon returning. Students will only be released to parents/guardians, unless written permission is given in advance. Do not go directly to the child's classroom. Please report to the office and your child will meet you there.

If a student leaves the premises without permission he or she will be considered truant and disciplined accordingly.

Tardiness

Being punctual is the student's first step in his responsibility to school. It is equally the responsibility of the parent to guide the student in the importance of being on time. Students will be warned on the first two un-excused tardies. If a third un-excused tardy should occur, the student will receive a 1/2 hour of detention after school for that and each consecutive tardy that semester. If tardiness seems to be a habitual problem a conference will be called by the administration to address the problem.

School Health Services

In addition to giving first aid, the school nurse performs screening tests, evaluates the medical history, the physical conditions and their impact on the child's learning style and behavior pattern.

All students are to have on file in the nurse's office a student emergency form listing parents, baby sitters, doctors and any information needed to help the child. Every effort is made by the nurse to notify the parent of the child's physical and mental health problems by phone, letter or conference.

Any child who has a fever above 100° is to remain home for 24 hours of normal temperature (without Acetaminophen) before returning to school. Students with the following symptoms are excluded from school:

    o     Temperature of 100° and above
    o     Severe colds, coughing, sneezing

    o     Upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea
    o     Sudden appearance of rash, uncomfortable skin conditions
    o     Suspicion of contagious disease
    o     Red or discharging eyes

                           Parents should also be aware that all school
                       personnel are bound by Kansas state law to report
                           incidences of possible child abuse or neglect.

Medications at School

School personnel must have parental consent and a physicians order to dispense prescription medications. Over the counter medication will be dispensed only if the Medication Request and Permission Form is signed by the parent/legal guardian and/or physician. For all medication, the original container, appropriately labeled, must be provided. If a medication is ordered three (3) times a day, this can usually be given at home in early A.M., after school or dinner time, and at bedtime.

All medication will be maintained in the nurse's office and dispensed according to label instructions and at the discretion of the school nurse. If it is necessary for the student to retain possession of medication (i.e. inhalers), this must be discussed with the school nurse, requested in writing via the Medication Request and Permission Form and approved by your child's physician.

The Nurse will have regular strength Acetaminophen (generic Tylenol), Ibuprofen, (generic Advil), Tums, topical anitbiotic ointment, topical coritsone ointment, calamine lotion, and benadryl. If you want your child to have any other type of "over the counter medication" at school you must provide it in the original container and it must be checked on the Medication Request and Permission Form or accompanied by a signed note from the parent.

All students are screened for vision and hearing in Grades 1,2,3,5 & 7. You may request additional screenings at any time if you feel there is a problem. Parents are notified by letter or phone if any problems are seen.

Dental exam cards are given out early in the school year and should be signed and handed in by May 1st each year.

Please notify the nurse if your child has sutures, cast or other incapacitating injury limiting their activity. Your child will be excused from Physical Education class or recess periods when a note from a parent is sent to school. A note can excuse your child for a maximum of five days. A note from your physician is required for your child to be excused for more than five days. All students are required by the State of Kansas and St. Joseph School to be

top

                                                                                                                        15
currently immunized against measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus. All kindergarten, 1st and 3rd graders must also be immunized against chicken pox and hepatitis B. It is recommended that all students K-8 have two doses of Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine. Kansas Certification of Immunization (KC D040794) and physical examination forms are due on registration day and are delinquent on first day of the school year. If a family enrolls at a time other than regular registration, proof of immunization is to be in the health office within 30 days of the registration date. If not, the student is excluded until proof of immunization is on file.

If a child becomes ill during the school day you will be called by the school nurse. Students are not allowed to call home to have parents pick them up, but they will be sent to the nurse who will call you if she feels the child needs to be sent home.
