Our
Mission
The mission of The CYO Program of St. Joseph Church is to provide the youth of
our parish with a quality environment, which promotes Christian sportsmanship,
instruction, teamwork, and the enjoyment of sports.
History of CYO
Reverend Tom Tank, Archdiocesan Youth Director, established the CYO Executive Board in 1974. The purpose of the CYO Executive Board is to provide CYO athletic activities for the youth of Wyandotte and Johnson Counties conducted according to the norms of Christian sportsmanship. Currently Dave Nick is the Executive Athletic Director of Greater CYO in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties in Kansas.
Coaches:
All CYO coaches must be good Christian people of unquestionable character who: 1) have respect for the participants under their care as well as respect for other coaches, participants and officials; 2) consider participation above winning; 3) provide leadership, and an example of Christian sportsmanship.
Head Coach:
The head coach is the person who has the responsibility for the team. The head coach is a person who is present nearly all of the time the team is together.
Coaches will administer the team stressing teamwork towards an overall goal, not emphasizing individual accomplishments or abilities.
Assistants to the head coach are the head coach’s responsibility and should be secured by the head coach keeping in mind the qualifications for all CYO coaches.
All CYO head coaches must be certified by the National Youth Sport Coaches Association (NYSCA) for the current sports year, (June 1 through May 31) in the sport that he or she is coaching. Also all head coaches and assistant coaches will be Virtus trained. There are no exceptions, if a coach is not certified then he or she will not be a coach.
Pre-season Evaluations
Volleyball and basketball will have an open pre-season evaluations of its participants. This will be done by outside coaches or other experts in the field. The evaluators may not have a child in the sport they are evaluating. The evaluations will be conducted in a fair manner with favoritism towards no one.
Evaluations are to be stress free. The child will be asked to perform several basic skills for the particular sport he or she wants to participate in. Once the evaluation period is over the scores will be tallied and the teams divided in a fair manner.
Parents may not be present during the evaluation period. No St. Joseph coaches will be allowed in during the evaluation period.
Playing Time
Each child is required to play a minimum of time for the sport they are playing. The only exception for this is due to an injury or discipline reasons. The coach will be required to report the time each child has played to the Athletic Director, who will in turn present it to the CYO board.
Minimum times per sport are listed below:
Concession Stand
The concession stand is an intricate part of the CYO program. Providing the patrons of the games with food and drinks generates revenue. This revenue helps keep the complex in good shape and the fees for each sport low.
In order for the concession stand to be a success, we need everyone’s help. Each team will be assigned times to staff the booths. Please contact your coach to find out when your team is scheduled. If your schedule conflicts, please contact another team/family to switch with you.
The
concession stand will be supervised by an adult (18 years or age) at all times.
Scorekeepers
One person (preferably an adult) from each team shall be seated at the score table and jointly keep the game’s score. The referee is the official timekeeper.
Compliments, Complaints, Concerns
The CYO board is committed to making the St. Joseph CYO program one of the best in the state. At any time, if you have any questions or concerns please look to your coach first for answers.
If the coach cannot provide the help needed, please contact the Sport Coordinator. Attached to this packet is an organizational chart, it contains all contact and responsibility information.
