Mission Statement
Students completing a course or courses of foreign language study in the schools located within the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas will demonstrate course-appropriate outcomes in the four basic language skills of speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing. Students will also gain an awareness and appreciation of other cultures in order to better participate in an ever-changing global society.
Mission Statement for Kansas Education
(From the Kansas State Department of Education)
FORWARD
The study of foreign languages is important in preparing students to participate in a global society. Employment opportunities increase for persons fluent in a second language. Furthermore, learning a second language enhances students' understanding and appreciation of other cultures.
In order to prepare students to use the language after graduation, special emphasis must be placed on giving the students many opportunities to develop and fine-tune skills in the four areas of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As students progress through the levels, skills are reviewed, practiced, and improved. In the higher levels, students should be required to analyze literary works and other media, and be able to use the target language in spontaneous situations.
The use of outcomes in the foreign language curriculum will give teachers direction in helping students to acquire proficiency in the second language. Outcomes are specific for grades 9-12 and more general for grades K-8. It is the hope of the Subject Area Committee that more elementary schools look for ways to include the study of foreign languages. In this revision we have developed a K-8 program which on its completion would satisfy the one level of a foreign language. The earlier students begin a programmed study of a foreign language, the higher the level of achievement.
At each level of the curriculum, standards have been determined for Grammar and Usage, Topics and Vocabulary, and Customs/Idiosyncrasies. Assessment suggestions have been provided for teacher consideration.
The Subject Area Committee would like to thank the foreign language teachers in the Archdiocese for their input and cooperation. We also take this opportunity to state that the Shawnee Mission curriculum guides for foreign languages greatly aided this committee in establishing the format in which this curriculum guide appears. These curriculum guides also helped the committee gain a sense of direction as we went about putting this curriculum together. With the skills, talents, and experience of these teachers, the challenge of implementing the new curriculum can be met. All are asked to keep in mind that the goal of this curriculum proposal is to achieve a standardization of foreign language learning throughout the Archdiocese.
